PODCAST EXCERPT California is a state plagued with wildfires. Fuelled by the Santa Ana winds that race down the mountains in the Mojave Desert to the Pacific Ocean. The winds create low humidity and warm temperatures that dry out the underbrush creating the perfect fuel to feed the fires. In 2005 Raymond Oyler began setting fires using a cigarette and matches tied together with a rubber band that he placed near dried out brush. The lick of the flames as they struggled for air amused him. But the fires remained small and he was disappointed. He tried again and again. Using a slingshot he launched the cigarette and matches in to the brush. With each fire he was getting more proficient. First it grew to ten acres, then to sixty acres. Then in October, Fire Engine 57 raced towards the Esperanza fire.
MURDERER: RAYMOND OYLER DEVIL IN THE WIND Raymond never made it as a firefighter. He had a fascination with fire and the power it held. As his life fell apart and he lost control, he turned to arson. Harnessing the Santa Ana winds, he reigned fire down on California.
